Learn to make a DIY DC motor.

In this article, I will show you how to make a DC motor on your own at home (diy dc motor). The thing I used to build this are very basic, a battery(any battery AAA or AA or C or D works), a magnet, two safety pins and insulated copper wire.

Before we get into the actual making, let me share the concept that is behind the working of a DC motor, The Faradays laws of induction, this states that, a conductor with currents in it, creates electromagnetic field. And when a magnet(magnetic field ) is introduced. the conductor attains some torque, this helps it rotate.

Now, let’s start…

Step 1: 

Take the insulated copper wire and wind it on any cylinder shaped object to get a circular winding with a desired size, leave some wire on both ends for further connections. Glue it and tie the winding using the two ends.

The radius of the circle and the number of windings totally depend on the distance between the battery with the magnet and the bottom end of the winding. Because there shouldn’t be anything obstructing the windings rotation.

This should look as the one in the image below.

Step 2:

Now, remove only the half coating, that is only the coating on one side of the wire on both right and left ends. Make sure that you only remove half coating, if you remove the coating on both side for both ends, the winding won’t rotate.

Step 3:

Now, using a tape stick the two safety pins to the two terminals of the battery. As shown below. This completes the circuit. The current passes through the winding. This is kind of an insulation, if you observe, after some time, the winding gets heated up;) No, don’t wait for it now! Go-to step 4.

Step 4:

Place the magnet on the battery, and the conductor starts to rotate.

There is an electromagnetic field and as soon as I introduced the magnetic field, the coil starts rotating. And make sure that you don’t completely remove the coating of the wire at the two ends(upper and bottom),  only half of it, that is the upper or bottom side coating should be removed. If you remove it completely on both sides, then the coil moves to and fro but doesn’t complete the rotation.

To increase the speed of the coil, use 9v battery.

        Haha I had to borrow a weaker magnet from a neighbouring kid, but of course that didn’t work so I just ended up explaining the principle of it 😰 But its fun to make, I had almost forgotten how to do it! Think I’ll show my little sister this.

      It’s like, when you take the surface of the wire, only one side that is, the side facing you must be separated from the insulation. The bottom side shouldn’t conduct. If both sides conduct, the coil just moves but doesn’t rotate…

      Depends on what battery you use… In my view, heating shouldn’t be a problem. That doesn’t get too hot.

      I think the rpm we need to run a fan that I made is more that this. May be with some calculated changes, you can implement your idea of combining both.
