DIY stylus pen. Make your own stylus!

Smart devices have become a part of our lives, most of them are touch screens. So, today let’s see how to make our own trendy “Stylus”. If you look online you will see a lot of expensive stylus. But, I made a stylus using bare minimum cost. Let’s see how!

Before I tell you about diy stylus pen, let’s learn what a stylus require to work, on a touch screen. Fisrt how a touch screen WORK??

Let’s talk about Resistive touch and Capacitive touch

There are two layers in a resistive touch, Resistive layer and Conductive layer, when our finger pushes both layers at ones then the voltage is changed and it recognises the touch and responds.

On June 29, 2007, Apple Inc. co-founder STEVE JOBS introduced a new touch technology with the first iPhone so called CAPACITIVE TOUCH. As soon as it was introduced rest of the companies started working with capacitive touch.

So, how a capacitive touch works?

Unlike resistive touch screens, capacitive screens do not use the pressure of your finger to create a change in the flow of electricity. Instead, they work with anything that holds an electrical charge including human skin. Yes we humans do hold electric charge. This is the most important key to contruct a stylus. Also that is the reason why you can’t touch your touch screen with other objects other than your skin.

Now’s let’s get into diy stylus pen:

The things you need to make a stylus are,

  1. An empty pen.
  2. A small piece of sponge.
  3. Aluminium foil.
  4. Glue (optional)
  5. Tissue paper (optional)
  6. Paint and painting brush (optional)
  7. Patience (optional) ;);)

What?? Many things in here are optional! Yeah, definatly. Also you don’t actually need a lot of patience, that’s the reason I wrote that.

STEP 1:

Take an empty pen. Empty in the sense without that refill.

STEP 2:

Stuff some sponge into one side of the pen.

STEP 3:

Cut some aluminium foil and paste it to the pen at the side you stuffed sponge with a tape. Also make sure to put the foil to the whole pen if you want your stylus to work wherever you put your finger on the stylus. Remember that the stylus only works, if your finger touch the touch-screen directly or indirectly.

You are pretty much done by now, when you touch the aluminium foil and test it on any of the touch screen devices, it clearly works. Remember to put your finger on the aluminium foil while touching the touch-screen.

Now, it’s time make your stylus look cool.

Grab the optional things i mentioned.

Step 4:

Take some glue in a cup and gently mix it with some water and glue in the ratio 2:1.

Step 5:

Apply the mixture to the stylus and paste the pieces of tissue paper on the stylus, do this to the pen completely.

STEP 6:

PATIENCE! Wait for a day to let it dry completely.

STEP 7:

Paint it with your favourite colour or just make use of the texture and draw with your favorate coloured sketches.. This is what I did!

Remember that the stylus ONLY works when your finger touches the aluminium foil directly or through the tissue paper.. Make your own stylus (diy stylus pen) and enjoy!;)
